Why Music Matters During Ketamine Therapy

Music can help guide the emotional and mental experience. The right music can promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and allow thoughts to be explored at a deeper level.

At North Idaho Ketamine & TMS in Coeur d' Alene, we carefully curated music options to create a calming and individualized environment. Headphones are provided for each ketamine therapy session, and music can be changed at any time. Whether you're new to treatment or looking to enhance your experience, choosing the right playlist can make a meaningful difference.

Making Your Own Playlist for Your Ketamine Experience:

Creating your own playlist for ketamine therapy can help you feel more comfortable, prepared, and supported during your session. Choosing the right tracks ahead of time can make a meaningful difference. The goal is to create a calm, steady, and immersive experience that allows your mind to relax and explore without distraction. When building your own playlist, consider the following:

  • Build a playlist on an app without ads.  Similar to lyrics, ads can pull attention away from the experience. The clinic offers playlists without ads if needed.

  • Pick music ahead of time and get familiar with what you like and don't like, you are welcome to change music at any time. Having different music options on hand can create different experiences during your ketamine treatment.

  • Ketamine can work similarly to classical conditioning. Having a good treatment experience with certain music can create a positive association outside of treatment as well. Many patients will revert back to music they've used in their ketamine treatments to bring a sense of calm and grounding throughout their daily lives.

Choosing The Right Music for Ketamine Therapy FAQ

  • Music can help guide ketamine sessions to make the experience more fluid and less distracting. As we all have experienced in day to day life, music can enhance how we feel. Did you ever listen to music as a kid, and daydream about being in the music video? Ketamine and music work together very similarly!

  • A ketamine therapy playlist should typically be as long as your session. We recommend 90 minutes to 2 hours in order to keep your playlist from repeating. Some apps, such as Apple Music, have  options to slowly blend tracks together, avoiding silence when one song ends and another begins.

  • During a ketamine therapy session, it's best to listen to music that is calming, steady, and free from distraction. Avoid music with too many tone changes, and steer away from music that you don't enjoy. Although we recommend ambient, instrumental soundscapes, some patients find other genres work better for them.

  • Music plays a big role in shaping your ketamine infusion experience. Ketamine creates an introspective and immersive state; sound, smell, and lighting becomes more impactful. Different sounds can take you on different journeys, it's about creating your "own little world" you can immerse in that feels comfortable, relaxing, and can support emotions in a positive way.

  • Preparing for a ketamine session can include choosing your music, setting intentions, and understanding what to expect. Wearing comfortable clothing and creating a calm mindset beforehand can help improve your experience. Our team provides guidance before, during, and after each session to ensure you feel prepared and supported.
